They hadn’t heeded Rosamund’s advice and now, Hunter could concede, they were up shit creek without a paddle. A gigantic fallen tree blocked their way on their trip back down a tiny lane he’d mistakenly driven up. Then again, the bucketing rain and mist had made seeing much more than a foot in front of them impossible. It was getting late. If only it hadn’t taken him so long to find the button that closed the convertible’s roof — showing his true colours regarding such skills — they might not be in this predicament.

‘Maybe if I turn back around, there’ll be another way out of here,’ Hunter murmured, swinging the steering wheel. Besides, he didn’t have any other ideas.

‘I don’t know,’ Imogen said uncertainly as he did a U-turn back the way they’d come. ‘It looked like a private lane to me.’

The windscreen wipers were going like the clappers as the rain pelted down. ‘Hang on, is that another road?’ Hunter stopped at a break in the roadside, where a rain-slickened stretch of cement beckoned.

‘It could be …’

After a moment’s thought, he began manoeuvring the car up the tree-lined incline. It seemed to go for miles, not that they could see much ahead of them. It was like they were driving into the eye of a storm.

Then, all of a sudden, rising above the soggy grey clouds was a multi-storied, stone bloody castle, complete with baroque towers and turrets and fancy windows. Like something out of a fairy-tale. It wasn’t a road but a driveway. Imogen was now looking at him with wide eyes.

‘D-did you know about this place?’

He slowly shook his head, similarly disbelieving. ‘I had no idea.’ A small, white sign, with red and navy-blue lettering, told him accommodation was currently available there. He turned off the ignition, which also killed the much-welcome heating. ‘Looks like it’s a bed-and-breakfast, not Romeo and Juliet’s last abode. Maybe the owners will know a better route home.’

Imogen scrambled to unclick her seatbelt. ‘Good idea.’

At the service desk, a short man scampered over, reminding Hunter of a joker in a deck of playing cards with his impish face and gleaming black hair. ‘Room for two?’

That was all Hunter needed. For Imogen to get fanciful ideas in her head. He needed to keep his wits about him, not be distracted by her golden hair, coltish legs, and seductive blend of vulnerability and sex appeal. He had to keep his mind on the mission.

‘Oh no, we’re not together,’ Hunter said hurriedly, feeling water from his hair drip inside his jacket collar and down his front. He’d let Imogen use the umbrella. ‘What we’re looking for is a way out of here. Don’t know you if you realise but there’s a fallen tree blocking the lane outside.’

The B&B owner solemnly nodded. ‘Our neighbour who shares the back lane just phoned my wife and me. And therein lies the problem. He notified the State Emergency Service about the road blockage, but they’re flat-chat in this wild weather and unfortunately we’re low on the priority list as only the three of us use the lane.
